There’s no question that Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth in Southern California face some harsh and unique challenges that often prevent them from living happy, successful lives. Many LGBTQ youth face neglect or abuse from family members because of their sexual orientation. Some also experience disadvantages in foster care. According to the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), 78% of LGBTQ youth were removed or ran away from their foster placements as a result of hostility toward their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The NCLR also revealed that over 30% of LGBT youth reported suffering physical violence at the hands of a family member after coming out. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) studies reveal that between 25% and 50% of homeless youth are LGBT and on the streets because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT youth are overrepresented in foster care, juvenile detention, and among homeless youth.
Trinity Youth Services, a foster care and adoptions agency in Southern California, is dedicated to improving the lives of all children and youth suffering from abandonment and abuse. According to Jackie Jakob, Trinity’s Foster Care & Adoptions Director, “All children, regardless of their sexual preference, have a right to live in safe, nurturing homes.”
So many of our LGBTQ youth are in crisis and are homeless. We’re committed to providing them with loving homes with families who understand their plight and know, from firsthand experience, how to give them the love and support they need.
To help LGBTQ youth experience more empowerment and acceptance, Trinity Youth Services is actively seeking support from compassionate, qualified LGBTQ families and encouraging them to become foster parents. Our primary focus for our youth is for them to feel welcomed just as they are, regardless of who they love.”
According to Marketing Specialist, Florence Edwards, “Being a youth who identifies as LGBTQ often means being targeted, shamed, abused and abandoned because of who you love. As a former foster youth who is also gay, being in foster care as a teen was horrifying because no one understood what I was going through. It was a very painful time for me. I often contemplated suicide.”
“What I appreciate about Trinity Youth Services the most is their commitment to treating all children and youth with love and respect. They are determined to put the needs of children first, even after experiencing backlash for supporting LGBTQ youth. What I hope people will begin to realize is that our agency was built on love. Real love is unconditional, and all children deserve to experience that.”
Trinity Youth Services is dedicated to enriching the lives of LGBTQ youth by providing LGBTQ workshops, peer support activities, resource parent training, online Q & A events, webinars to increase tolerance and support to decrease the negative effects of homophobia and intolerance.
